The reduplicant normally contains an element from at least one edge of the base, tipycally the left edge in prefixed reduplicant and the right edge in suffixed reduplicant. Edge-anchoring has been observed and studied even more extensively in the input-output domain, where it has been identified with the class of constraints on the "alignment" of edges of morphological and prosodic constituents.
