The theory of lexical structure proposed in Lieber [Lieber, R., 1980, ‘On the Organization of the Lexicon’, MIT, Cambridge] makes available the following theoretical mechanisms for derivation and compounding. All morphemes, stems and affixes alike, have lexical entries which contain information about their category and subcategorization (i.e. what sort of lexical item, if any, they must attach to), their semantic representation, argument structures, diacritic specifications, and so on.
