The assignment of other morphological properties, such as gender, requires reference to corresponding properties of other words. Since these processes involve domains larger than the word, it is reasonable to assume that they are part of the syntax. The interpretive and lexical both handle these processes, but in different ways. [...] In the lexical model, the lexicon generates a full range of inflected forms independent of specific syntactic requirements. Once syntactic agreement and government are determined, lexical insertion matches appropriate words to the apprpriate syntactic position: more precisely, a word can be inserted in a given syntactic position if the morphological features of the word are nondistinct from the features of that syntactic position [Chomsky, Noam, 1965, "Aspect of the Theory of Syntax", MIT Press, Cambridge].
