The assignment of other morphological properties, such as gender, requires reference to corresponding properties of other words. Since these processes involve domains larger than the word, it is reasonable to assume that they are part of the syntax. The interpretive and lexical both handle these processes, but in different ways. In an interpretive model of morphology, such as the (extended) word-and-paradigm model, the results of these operations are subject to rules of morphology and phonology, which give the syntactically specified forms phonological shape.
