A housewife leaves the radio on as she goes about her chores, not bothering to listen most of the time. The term ‘phatic communion’ has been proposed for this sort of minimal communicative activity which has no obvious consequence save to inform all concerned that the channels are in good working order for the transmission of more “important” messages.
