By “intersecting” we mean that a given acoustic allophone of phoneme B much more closely than it does some of the other allophones of pnoneme A. In an extreme instance, we find that what we know must in a certain environment be English /š/ may be absolutely identical, so far as we can measure, with what we know in another environment is English /s/.
