The intent of the CP is to characterize a fundamental difference among languages in the manner in which expressions in PS are related to argument positions in LS - that is, a fundamental difference in the manner in which the initial functional structure is determined. For configurational languages, the projection principle can be viewed as defining this relation as one of "identity", so that for each argument in LS there must be a corresponding constituent in PS.
