Abstractly, and under a radical but quite useful idealization, we may then think of language-learning as the process of selecting a grammar of the appropriate form that relates sound and meaning in a way consistent with the available data and that is valued as highly, in terms of the evaluation measure, as any grammar meeting these empirical conditions.
