[...] syntax expresses the relationships between sentences that are part of a speaker's knowledge of his or her language, and how sentences can be constructed from smaller units (lexical items). Syntax is thus particularly involved in capturing generalizations that refer to phrases and to the relationships between phrases and lexical items.
