We can note that the combination of the pair {S, M} and the rules that act on it corresponds to the traditional notion of the morphological representation of the form. That is, on this view, there is no unique association between particular elements of the morphosyntactic representation of a form (its syntactic "meaning") and particular formatives or other aspects of its surface form.
