What happens in the course of maturation is a process that we might from one point of view call ʻfunctional reductionʼ, whereby the original functional range of the child’s language – a set of fairly discrete functional components each with its own meaning potential – is gradually replaced by a more highly coded and more abstract, but also simpler, functional system.
