Since phonological processes tend to reduce distinctions, the child has to learn how to suppress, limit, and order the syntactic principles (these act to lay out the semantactic categories analytically) in relation to the phonological principles (these compress the linguistic materials, and typically reduce adverbs, participles, and so forth to inflections). The constant adjustment that goes on accounts for balances between syntax and phonology and for changes that affect both at the same time.
