[…] transfer theory predicts that learners with different L1 backgrounds will learn a second language in different ways due to the differing effects of positive and negative transfer. In this view the process of learning a second language consists in replacing the features of L1 that interfere with the acquisition of those of L2, and thus approximating the structures of the L2.
