[…] both standardization and pidginization are processes of language development connected with the expansion of a nation-state. The fact that the former is internal to its territorial borders and the latter external does not obscure the basic connection. As far as the more specifically linguistic consequences are concerned, the former more often involves elaboration and minimization of variability, while the latter involves reduction, simplification and maximization of variability.
