De Camp [DeCamp, D. 1971. “The study of pidgin and creole languages”, in Hymes, D. 1971. Pidginization and Creolization of Languages. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.] says that since the Second World War, and especially in the 1960s, the nature of pidgin and creole studies has changed radically in several ways. For one thing, the field has become unified. Before the 1950s few linguists dealt with both pidgin and creoles; and few studied more than one geographical area or more than one language. Each language was treated as a separate sphere of interest.

In 1969 the Modern Language’s Association annual bibliography groups pidgin-creole studies in a separate section rather than treating them as appendages to other languages such as French etc. De Camp [DeCamp, D. 1971. “The study of pidgin and creole languages”, in Hymes, D. 1971. Pidginization and Creolization of Languages. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press] dates the true birth of the field to 1959, when the first international conference on creole languages studies was held in Jamaica.
