I am using the term diagrammatic iconic relation in the sense used by Haiman [Haiman, J. 1980. “The iconicity of grammar”, Language 56: pp. 515-40.] to refer to a systematic arrangement of signs, none of which necessarily resembles its referent, but whose relationships to each other mirror the relationships to their referents.
