In the jargon stage there is what Silverstein [Silverstein, M. 1972. “Goodbye Columbus: Language and speech Community in Indian –European contact situations” manoscritto non pubblicato] calls a double illusion which makes communication possible. That is, the contact jargon is systematically relatable to both parties’ native languages, and is perceived as a kind of lexical extension of some variant of the native grammatical system.
