At fist glance, one might think that the referent of a verb like 'hit' was as unambiguously as the referent of a noun like dog, although in fact 'John hit Bill' could be rendered more accurately (if more circumlocutiously) as 'John clenched fist John drew-back arm John thrust-forward arm fist met Bill'.
