Bell's 'Visible Speech' is the best known of these [phonetic alphabets], chiefly because Henry Sweet (1845-1912) used it. The symbols of this alphabet are simplified and conventionalized diagrams of the vocal organs in position for the utterance of the various phonemes. Visible Speech is hard to write and very costly to print.
