Some of the characters of 'cuneiform' writing of the ancient Mesopotamian peoples still betray their origin in pictures, but for the most part this is not the case: the characters consist of longer and shorter wedge-shaped strokes in various arrangements and evidently got this shape because they were scratched into tough clay.
