As a matter of fact, the mechanical English vocalic alternation 'bad:bat' would in many languages be quite marked enough to indicate a relation of distinct points in the pattern, while the English pattern relation '-t: -d', which seems so self-evidently real to us, has in not a few other languages either no reality at all or only a mechanical, conditional one.
