Overt structural junctures are marked by formal contrasts in types of sequences. For example, in the English word 'kingdom' the sequence /ng/ is structurally distinctive, because it never occurs within a single morpheme, the sequence /nd/, on the other hand, does occur within morphemes, e.g. 'sandy', 'landed'.
