1. Divisions should conform to meaningful relationships. 2. Divisions are made on the basis of the substitutability of larger units by smaller units belonging to the same or a different external distribution class. 3. Divisions should be as few as possible. 4. Divisions should be supported by the total structure of the language. 5. Other things being equal, a division into continuous immediate constituents has precedence over a division into discontinuous immediate constituents.
