The principle used the phrase 'common semantic distinctiveness' as a way of indicating that the meaning which is in common to all the occurrences of the suffix '-er' [in such construction as 'worker', 'dancer' ] contrasts with (or is distinctivelly set off from) the meaning of all other similar forms [comparative adjectives as 'wider', 'broader'].
