Citazioni

However, in precisely the same manner as we recognize endocentricity and exocentricity in linguistic distribution, i.e. as regards the 'linguimacrosemes', so we must likewise recognize the endocetric and exocentric features of the non-linguistic distribution, i.e. as regards the 'ethnomacrosemes'. For example, 'applesauce', as a designation of a food is semantically endocentric, but when used as an exclamation of disbelief or disgust (roughly equivalent to 'Horse feathers!' or 'Bologna!') it is exocentric.

The phrase 'black bird' is structurally and semantically endocentric, but the compound 'black-bird', tho structurally still endocentric, is semantically exocentric, since it identifies a class of birds, which, tho black, do not include all black birds, e.g. 'crows'.
