SoAs [states of affairs] can be divided into different types, according to the values they have for a number of semantic parameters. These parameters and their values together define a semantic cross-classification of SoAs. This cross-classification is relevant to both the semantic and syntactic properties of the expressions involved. By “types” of SoA we mean such differences as between:
(1) a. John saw a bird (Process, Experience)
b. He shot at it (Action)
c. The bird fell down (Process)
d. It was dead (State)
