The structure of terms may be described by means of the following schema:

in which xi is the “term variable”, ranging over the set of potential referents of the term, Ω stands for one or more “term operators”, and each Φ (xi) is an “open predication in xi”, i.e. a one-open predication of which the open term position is occupied by xi. The colon “:” indicates that the information to the right gives a specification of, a restriction on, the possible values of xi, as it has been specified to the left.
