In discussing quantification it is useful to distinguish three types of ensemble [Brown, 1985, “Term operators” in Bolkestein et al. (eds.), 1985, “Predicates and terms in Functional Grammar”, Dordrecht, Foris, 127-145]:
(40) a. the Referent Ensemble R: R is the ensemble
that is being referred to in a given usage of
term.
b. the Domain Ensemble D: D is the ensemble
from which R is taken as a sub-ensemble.
c. the Universal Ensemble U: U is the ensemble
containing all the entities that have the
