Attitudinal satellites (σ3) are the lexical means by which S [speaker] can express his attitude towards the propositional content […] Consider such examples as the following:
(20) a. ‘In my opinion’, we should do it (Subjective, Opinion)
b. ‘Hopefully’, you will succeed ( Subjective, Volition)
c. ‘In my experience’, such questions are seldom solved (Experiential)
d. ‘Apparently’, John has failed (Inferential)
e. ‘Allegedly’, John was guilty of perjury (Quotative)
Apart from expressing such modal distinctions as these, σ3 satellites can also express personal evaluations of that which is contained in the proposition. Consider the following examples:
(21) a. Wisely, John did not answer the question
b. Fortunately, we found him immediately
c. Understandably, no patriot wants to fall into disrepute
