A major goal of current linguistic research is to construct a theory of the lexicon which allows us to characterize the notion of "possible word" in a simple manner with a minimum of theoretical machinery. Such a theory would ideally predict the possibility of certain sorts of inflected or derived forms, compounds, and reduplicated words, while ruling out others.
