Saussure itself attenuated his "fundamental principle of arbitrariness" by making a distinction between the "radically" and the "relatively" arbitrary elements of language. He assigned to the latter category those signs which may be dissociated on the syntagmatic assis into constituents identifiable on the paradigmatic assis.
