The syllable system of English is of the ‘peak’ type: that is there are as many syllables as there are syllable-peaks. This type of syllable system is quite common, though the phonemic determination of what constitutes a peak is not always, as it is in English, merely the occurrence of a phoneme of a certain class (vowel).
