The external history of a language concerns the location and migrations of its speakers, the episodes in which they have had various sorts of contact with speakers of other languages, the circumstances under which it has acquired new groups of speakers or lost old groups, and so on—indeed, anything about the history of the speakers of the language which has some bearing on three history of the language itself.
