Clearly, the production theory has to assume that words are selected for the syntactic representation in fits and starts that are associated with syntactic groups of some form or another. (I will leave open the question of exactly what these groups are and whether the effects are due to the temporal characteristics of semantic processing, syntax-internal features, or both).
