The Separation Hypothesis assumes that L-derivation is accomplished by rules which (i) insert case function features (ii) and/or L-features, e.g. [±Plural], [±Feminine], [±Definite], into lexical bases or (iii) adjust (set) the value of such features. They do not add affixes or otherwise phonologically mark the lexical base.
