[...] in German, the verb "helfen" "help" takes a dative rather than an accusative object, a property that cannot apparently be deduced from the structure in which the object NP appears. Such behavior often goes by the unfortunate name of "quirky" case, especially in the literature on Germanic languages such as Icelandic in which it is particularly richly attested.
