When we talk of ʻsocial functions of languageʼ, we mean those contexts which are significant in that we are able to specify some of the meaning potential that is characteristically, and explainably, associated with them. And we shall be particularly interested if we find that in doing so we can throw light on certain features in the internal organization of language.
