The symbols and statements of descriptive linguistics cannot yield complete descriptions of speech occurrences (in either physiological or acoustic terms), nor can they yield information about the meaning and social situation of speech occurrences, about trends of change through time, and the like. In most of current linguistic research, the statements cannot even deal adequately with certain differences between slow and fast speech (e.g. 'good-bye' as compared with 'g’bye'), or with stylistic and personality differences in speech.
