In order to have a single composition, i.e. a single spelling, for all occurrences of a single morpheme, it is often necessary to resort to elements which represent the various phonemic compositions of the morpheme in its various environments. In some cases these elements may be merely redefinitions of phonemic symbols (redefined as a one-many correspondence); in other cases new symbols have to be defined. - Harris (1951), a pag.232
