When the segments represented by an element are successive, it is conventional to let their position in the stretch of speech determine the position and domain of their representation along the line of writing. When they are simultaneous, long, or discontinuous, special conventions are made in order to set the position and domain of their representation relative to the other elements. Such problems are also involved in the case of zero segments, void elements, and the like. - Harris (1951), a pag.370, n.12
