Many languages will have more than one basic utterance formula. E.g. in English not only does 'NVX' occur, but also any sequence containing at least one free morpheme occurs as an utterance with utterance contour. If all these different utterance types contain the same contour class, say 'X', we may omit 'X' from the formulae or diagrams and say that it is an automatic feature of utterance structure. - Harris (1951), a pag.351
