This kind of layered part-whole relationship which occurs among the units of a written text is referred to as CONSTITUENCY. Each unit consists of one or more of the next smaller – each sentence of one or more words, each word of one or more letters. It is important to point out that the number may be 'one or more'; in other words, in any given instance there may be one constituent only.
