[…] decreolization proceeds by acquiring new forms first and new functions later. Newly acquired morphemes are at first assigned meanings and functions that already exist in the speaker’s grammar; in other words, these morphemes have to be stripped of the meanings and functions which they had in the superstrate before they can be incorporated into the existing creole grammar.
